January 2014 Theme - Be Big for God

It is always a joy when a song inspires a Sunday sermon and it is an even greater joy when one inspires an entire month.  That is what has happened this January with a new song written by New Thought singer/songwriter Cerise Patron.  The song is entitled “Be Big for God,” and this month we will explore how the roots of our teachings invite us, instruct us, inspire us and infuse us with enthusiasm to do just that!

January Talk 1 – “The Invitation to be Big for God”
Religious Science Version:
Religious Science Founder Dr. Ernest Holmes once wrote, “The greatest gift Life could have made to you is yourself.  You are a spontaneous, self-choosing center in Life, in the great drama of being, the great joy of becoming, the certainty of eternal expansion.”  As we embark on a new year, filled with pure potential, you are invited to contemplate the ideas of being and becoming big, and even bigger, for God.  What qualities of God are calling you into expansion?  What is calling you deeper?  What is calling you into a grander experience of life?  Today, in a very personal and meaningful way, we RSVP “yes” to this invitation.  [MINISTER’S NOTE:  You will want to have small envelopes and papers available for each congregant for an exercise at the end of the talk.]

Unity Version:
Unity co-founder Charles Fillmore once wrote:  “We find that life is a principle; that it is inherent in Being, everywhere present at all times; that it is manifest to consciousness through vehicles; that these vehicles are animated by life according to their capacity or power to express it; that that capacity or power of expression is governed by the idea of life that is infused into it by the generative energy of the I AM.”  As we embark on a new year, filled with the very idea of life, you are invited to contemplate the ideas of being and becoming big, and even bigger, for God.

January Talk 2 – “The Instructions on Being Big for God”
Religious Science Version:
In “The Basic Ideas of Science of Mind,” Ernest Holmes wrote, “. . . we are made of and possess God-like qualities and we have the right and the ability to develop and use them.  In fact it is necessary for us to do this if we are to fully express the Life within us.”  Today, we explore how our teachings instruct us to access this right and ability.

Unity Version:
In “Talks on Truth,” Charles Fillmore wrote, “The creative law makes man responsible for the bringing forth of the divine perfection.  God finished His work in the ideal, and we are making it manifest.”   Today, we explore how our teachings instruct us how to make it manifest.

January Talk 3 – “The Inspiration to be Big for God”
Religious Science Version:
Holmes tells us, “We can be certain that there is an Intelligence in the Universe to which we may come that will guide and inspire us.”  So, what inspires you?  A beautiful sunset, the smile of a baby, a piece of music or making a difference in someone else’s life?  Whatever it is, it comes from the Intelligence of the Universe and is your inspiration to be big for God.

Unity Version:
Fillmore tells us: “There is within every man such a place – the ‘secret place of the Most High.’  When man finds this place and accepts its privileges as his, he is let into the realm of pure metaphysics, where Mind alone with all its transcendent powers holds free, untrammeled sway. . . It is here that man understands what it is to be inspired by the Spirit to say and do things extraordinary in the sight of the world.”    So, what inspires you?  A beautiful sunset, the smile of a baby, a piece of music or making a difference in someone else’s life?  Whatever it is, it comes from the Intelligence of the Universe and is your inspiration to be big for God.

January Talk 4 – “The Enthusiasm to be Big for God”
Religious Science Version
“. . . one truly filled with enthusiasm is like one possessed with a divine power . . . which one actually is.  We become enthused in the consciousness that we are God-sustained and filled with God-power.”  Today, we conclude our theme of being “Big for God” infused with enthusiasm for the Truth of these words from Dr. Holmes!

Unity Version:
“I fairly sizzle with joy and enthusiasm and spring forth with a mighty faith to do the things that ought to be done by me.” Today, we conclude our theme of being “Big for God” infused with enthusiasm for the Truth of these words from Charles Fillmore!

Monthly Affirmation:
Today, I am big for God!
I shine bright . . . so the world sees my light.
I break free . . . and live in perfect harmony.
I let go of fear and doubt . . . and bring change about.
Today, I am big for God!
