October 2015 Theme - Falling in Love with Life
As fall approaches in [fill in the name of your city], we are going to let the idea of the fall season be a symbol for us to fall in love with Life, the Fullness and the Allness of Life Itself and all that that means. The Sufi poet Rumi has written volumes on this topic, so each week his writing will inspire us. Wherever you are in your love affair with life – deeply committed and totally in love or considering a divorce – there will be something for you here this month. Be sure to join us!
October Talk 1 – “In Your Light, I Learn How to Love”
Many of Rumi’s poems were directed to the Ultimate Beloved, God, and that will be our focus today. Here is his poem that inspires us: “In your light I learn how to love. In your beauty, how to make poems. You dance inside my chest where no one sees you, but sometimes I do, and that sight becomes this art.”
October Talk 2 - “Finding Love Within”
Rumi wrote, “You wander from room to room hunting for the diamond necklace that is already around your neck!” He also said, “You were born with potential. You were born with goodness and trust. You were born with ideals and dreams. You were born with greatness. You were born with wings. You are not meant for crawling, so don't. You have wings. Learn to use them and fly.” Today, we find our diamond necklaces and learn how to use our wings and, in that, we find Love within! Today, we also prepare for our 40 days of gratitude leading up to Thanksgiving. Be sure to be with us to receive a gratitude journal.
October Talk 3 - “Releasing the Barriers to Love”
[Ministers’Note: This talk has a skit in the middle of it that was part of the original Friendship Month sermons, so you might have used it before. So had I, but that didn’t stop my congregation from loving it again! And for many of them, it was new.]
“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” This is some deep wisdom from Rumi. What stands in your way of falling in love with Life, totally and completely? Today, in a fun, playful way, we will make that discovery and release the barriers once and for all.
October Talk 4 – “Getting Wise to Love”
As we bring our month’s theme to a close, our final Rumi quote is: “Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” Today, we all become a bit wiser.
